*** HACKATHON UPDATES! ***
Thanks to all our Hack for L.A. participants! Here are some updates for Day 2:
- HUGE SHOUTOUT to our senseis who went around all the hack rooms to meet and mentor our hackers. Our participants have been raving about the awesome help they’ve received.
- Remember to check Challengepost for full details on all the Prize Challenges, and to submit your projects! You must submit your apps online by 4PM SUNDAY in order to be considered for judging. Here is the link to submit your projects: http://hackforla.challengepost.com/
- Wi-Fi Issue: Sincerest apologies for the venue wi-fi access on Saturday. We had over 200 attendees trying to log in to 3 networks, so they quickly overloaded. We have brought in 8 additional hotspots for Sunday, so access should be better for the hackathon wrap-up. Thank you everyone for your patience!
- Hack for LA - The Afterparty! Sunday, 6PM-9PM
Food & Drinks provided
Just 1/2 mile walk from the Hackathon venue.
Close to parking on Pennsylvania & Bailey St.
- Here’s the link to will.i.am’s hackathon kickoff video -- share it, like it, tweet it, make some noise for Boyle Heights! http://youtu.be/12r-3PechX4
- Here’s the link to will.i.am’s video for the National Day of Civic Hacking, challenging his friends Jay-Z, Kanye West and Britney Spears to make hackathons in their communities! http://youtu.be/2jvJn0hfNKs
Here in LA we have just elected a new mayor; what better time to show the city and the country what the LA tech community can contribute than by being part of our civic hack day in Boyle Heights?
Founding partners for the project include will.i.am’s i.am.angel Foundation, New Economy Campaigns, AT&T., and many members of Tech4Garcetti. The event will bring together citizens, software developers, students, and entrepreneurs to collaboratively create, build, and invent new solutions using publicly-released data, code and technology to solve challenges relevant to Boyle Heights, our neighborhoods and our city.
Google, Scopely, CGI, Chase Bank, memBRAIN, ESRI, NuoDB and Factual are providing additional support for prizes and event production and getting their technology staff involved in the event. In addition, local tech companies and organizations including NASA JPL, Nationbuilder, Topspin Media, Citysearch, Beachbody, Lootsie, Datapop, Challengepost, StartUp Digest, Silicon Beach LA and Carbon5 are providing technical support, community outreach and developer volunteers to serve as coaches and mentors throughout the weekend of hacking. Staff from the Los Angeles City Information Technology Agency and local U.S. Census Bureau representatives will be on hand to promote use of public data for innovation.
This special Hackathon is focused on civic hacking and is designed for attendees (technical & non-technical) to build apps/mobile apps, get fed, compete for prizes across different categories and most importantly: meet new people and scout for teammates to work on new or current projects. Our hackathon will introduce you to the latest cutting-edge tools and APIs as well as allow you to access data sets provided by the city of LA.
Developers will have the chance to generate solutions for community problems in Boyle Heights and all of LA while inspiring local high school students about mobile app development.
To make this event even more interesting, there will be a MakerFaire taking place adjacent to the Hackathon, where attendees will have the chance to play with innovative new technology while learning about the diversity and cultural richness of the Boyle Heights community. Organizations including LA Makerspace, Two Bit Circus, Deezmaker, The Exploratory, and Crashspace will demonstrate how fun technology can be by showcasing 3D printers and other awesome exhibits.
We Supply: Quick presentations and code samples that help to bootstrap your hacking, food to keep you going, and caffeine to keep you awake, along with technical senseis and mentors to assist you in building faster and smarter apps while incorporating new tools. We’ll also have specific civic data challenges that you can work on as part of a team.
You Bring: Your laptop, skills, ideas, and enthuaism for civic change. Come with a collaborative, team-focused mindset and/or team up in advance on Twitter/Facebook/Google+ via @HackforLA. Whether you are a backend person and code in Ruby/PHP/.NET or a designer and work with Illustrator, a student, or a data geek you are invited to attend this event. Every group needs a good balance of talent and your development skills are needed!
